45th Annual US Coral Reef Task Force Meeting 2022

September 2022

The United States Coral Reef Task Force (USCRTF) leads U.S. efforts to preserve and protect coral reef ecosystems. Together with the Kona ʻohana and the planning committee, Hālau ʻŌhiʻa planned and grounded this event in ʻaha (ceremony). The intention was to bring in the image and idea of oceans that create the foundations for life to build upon. Check out some short clips of the protocol below. (Video credit DLNR)

 

Mauli Ola Virtual Gathering- Hālāwai

Mauli Ola Virtual Gathering is hosted by Hālāwai, an organization that connects New York City's Hawai'i community to resources, events, and each other. Hālau ʻŌhiʻa was invited to share an intimate workshop on the MOʻOKŪʻAUHAU, personal continuum or genealogical chant.

Ka Waiwai No Nā Kūpuna Summit

MAR 4, 2022

Kamehameha Schools hosted the inaugural "Ka Waiwai No Nā Kūpuna" Conference. Hālau ʻŌhiʻa was invited to host a keynote presentation. An engaging presentation to over 400 attendees, where we explored ways to strengthen our relationship with ʻāina through kaʻao (myth), mele (text), and hei (ritual string).

Kīpaepae for ʻŌhiʻa Love Fest

NOV 16, 2020

ʻŌhiʻa Love Fest is an annual celebration of our native ʻōhiʻa tree. Hālau ʻŌhiʻa led the opening Kīpaepae ceremony to welcome online participants from across Hawaiʻi to this event.

Hawaiʻi Invasive Species Awareness Month (HISAM)

FEB 2021

As part of both opening and closing for the 2021 Hawaiʻi Invasive Species Awareness Month (HISAM), Hālau ʻŌhiʻa hosted kuahu ritual and discussion to bring unified focus to the health of our plant communities.

UH Hilo TCBES Symposium

APR 16, 2021

Every year, the Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science (TCBES) Masterʻs program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo holds a student-led symposium. This year, Hālau ʻŌhiʻa was invited to co-host an interactive kuahu seminar as part of this event, which centered on the theme of biocultural restoration.
